Oxygen Concentrator Care: Protecting It From Extreme Weather

Posted by Todd Flesch on 11th Aug 2022

As a vital piece of medical equipment, your portable oxygen concentrator needs special care in order to work properly and last over the long term. If you are someone who needs oxygen regularly, or often uses it outdoors, it’s important to know how to best care for your oxygen concentrator unit and keep it safe from harm during extreme weather. High humidity, rain, snow, high winds, and extreme heat or cold can potentially damage your concentrator.

Here are some tips to remember to best protect your concentrator from the elements:

1. Opt for shade on hot days.

Each portable oxygen concentrator has a maximum operating temperature, which can be found in the owner’s manual. If you’re using your oxygen outside in the direct sun, make sure your machine doesn’t get too hot. Move to the shade whenever possible.

2. Don’t let it freeze.

Similar to the above tip, make sure you know your concentrator’s minimum operating temperature, too. Most concentrators won’t work well in freezing temperatures, at least not for long. Try carrying it in an insulated bag or backpack, and only go outdoors in the cold for short periods of time.

3. Cover from wind and dust.

Your concentrator must pull air from the outside, and it does this through filtered holes on the sides. However, if these holes become clogged with dust and debris, it could not only reduce your unit’s efficiency but could potentially cause mechanical damage. This is another reason why we recommend a good carrying case to protect your unit from airborne debris.

4. Avoid water at all costs.

Oxygen concentrators and water don’t mix! Whether it’s rain, snow, or poolside splashes, water should be kept away from your unit. If a little gets on the outside, simply wipe it off, but if it gets soaked, you may need to take it apart and let it dry fully or contact the manufacturer for further instructions.
