How to Keep Your Oxygen Concentrator Safe Around Kids

by | 0 comments

If you are one of the millions of Americans who use supplemental oxygen, you probably have a portable oxygen concentrator that you rely on for your daily needs. These concentrators are priceless tools that can give you tremendous freedom and independence, while helping you manage conditions like COPD. They feature innovative technology and require maintenance and care, just like any piece of medical equipment. So it’s important to take good care of your concentrator, especially if you are ever around kids.

Children are naturally curious but don’t always understand that some things need to be handled delicately. Here are some tips to help you keep your concentrator safe around kids:

1. Store it securely.

Whenever you are not using your concentrator, make sure you never leave it on the floor or leave it unattended in areas that kids can reach. Find a secure location for storage, either in a cabinet, drawer, or a similar location. Preferably somewhere it cannot easily fall.

2. Use a case.

When you are using your concentrator, it’s often easiest to keep it in a storage bag, case, or sleeve. This can protect the components from sticky hands, spilled liquids, and other hazards that often come with kids. Plus, it makes it more comfortable and convenient for you!

3. Talk to the kids.

If you’re able, take a moment to talk to your children or grandchildren about your portable oxygen concentrator. Explain how it works and how it helps you to feel better. Then, explain why they need to be careful around it. If kids can understand the reasoning, they’re more likely to be gentle.

4. Have some backups.

Sometimes, accidents happen no matter how careful we are. If you end up with a torn cannula, dirty filter, or broken carrying strap, it helps to have a few backup accessories on hand. This is a good idea even if you’re not around kids!
